Peter Lathouwers (interview)

Peter Lathouwers lives in a small town in Belgium. His influences vary from wild nature to the human beast within to heavy and black metal music to utter nihilistic beauty. Most of his works are abstract but he is also known for trying to make the canvas look like a photo which is very cool! Peter is a big fan of horror and slasher movies so you'll find a lot of that in his art gallery. He also does logo and t-shirt designs for bands as well! When I first viewed his artwork I was very excited and had to share it with all of you!

MINI INTERVIEW WITH PETER!
:D

DAMIANA: You have many intriguing pieces in your art gallery ranging from floral to black metal and the macabre. What is the one thing that motivates you to create when you start an art piece?

PETER: I wanna make people see what I see I guess. I want to somehow be able to pass on the emotion, be it good or bad, through the painting to the viewer. Also it is an amazing way to ease my frantic mind. To just be able to exist with the canvas. Nothing in the mind, only instinct and a brush... and just letting it all go for a change.

DAMIANA: In your mission gallery there is a replica of the "Creation of Adam" painting by Michelangelo. You painted this for a friend after he built his home. It was placed in his hallway. How did you feel when painting this for your friend and why was it placed in the hallway?

PETER: Actually, it is not placed in his hallway. It is painted on the wall of the hallway. He did indeed build the entire house with his own hands and without help from anyone. One night we were there just fantasizing about those wonderful mansions you see in the magazines sometimes and he wanted something unique in his home as well. It was evident that I proposed to do a mural painting for him. After some brainstorming together we ended up with 'The creation of Adam'. We did it in the hallway so that when someone enters they immediately see the painting after they close the door. A real eye catcher so to speak. I loved every minute of doing that painting!

DAMIANA: You also do band logo's, t-shirts, etc. Are these hand painted and/or screen printed? What brought your artwork into the music world?

PETER: They are all hand painted.
I think that was a logical step. Music brought me in the art world so it seems logic that I try to give it something back. I started drawing at the age of nine after seeing the 'two minutes to midnight' LP cover of Iron Maiden and the logo on the back of a Hells Angel. It all scared me pretty much and I figured if I could draw it I could own it and it would never be able to hurt me or scare me again somehow. Kids are strange...
Btw, I don't charge a dime for any musical missions, I only ask to be credited if the work is used.

DAMIANA: A lot of your artwork is abstract in nature. I believe what drew me to your artwork so strongly was the intense conceptual aspect that triggered many emotions within me as I viewed the many pieces you have in your gallery. Your creative spectrum is endless, Peter. Is there any advise that you would like to give aspiring artists?

PETER: Follow your heart! Really, how cheesy this may sound, it is true. Don't think about rules or measurements, think outside the box and do what your gut tells you to. I still make that mistake once and awhile. Trying to make the canvas to be 'correct'. It always ends up with me destroying the painting and losing a day or two.

Peter's gallery includes:
* Acrylic paintings
* Band logo's
* Black Metal portraits
* Drawings/Horror art work
* Expositions
* Jackets and Shirts
* Mission
